30,000 Hits

30,000 In 47 Days

When it comes to blogging it is a lot like golf.  We may think we are competing against other bloggers but we are really only competing against ourselves.  30,000 hits in 47 days to some is pathetic because that is what they get in a day, especially when a person’s blog lands on the WordPress Blogs of the Day.  Still yet to some 30,000 hits in 47 days is freaking awesome but you know when it comes right down to it the person it should really matter to the most is myself (yourself for your blog).

Why Do You Blog?

I do not blog to make money because if I did I wouldn’t be on WordPress.com.  WordPress.com doesn’t allow one to advertise on their own blog, which in reality it isn’t our blog, it is WordPress.com’s.  I blog on Dummies Of The Year because I like to have fun and I like to write down some humorous stuff even if the humor is dry.  I think that is a good reason to blog but if the hits/traffic/visitors aren’t coming to Dummies Of The Year then blogging becomes boring.  What’s better than traffic alone?  Comments of course.  Comments are icing on the cake.  It let’s me know several things: People like what I am writing, people don’t like what I am writing and/or that people leave a comment in hopes that I will come visit their site and leave a comment as well.

Your Thoughts

Why do you blog?  What have you done on your blog that has helped you gain traffic?

I wish I was kidding - I am new. LOL!!

That would be cool!!!

Soooo if I bought a blog domain from wordpress, THEN could I advertise?? Thanks!

You are kidding right? ;)

No matter what we are not allowed to advertise but I have heard a rumor that we may one day be able to purchase an upgrade so that we can have advertisements.

30,000 hits. Holy cow. Congrats.

Thanks Pete. Hope the wedding went well.

Well advertising would be pretty handy for anyone getting 30,000 hits in just over a month... you could make some decent mooler!! ;) I think you can place ads on your site if you use download the Wordpress site creator from wordpress.org and host it through your own means. I've seen Word Press created blogs with Google ads on them, you just can't do it using wordpress.com

I think the main strengths of your blog are that you blog very regularly and you do so on a multitude of topics. I think you also attract a lot of comments as you keep posts short and sweet so people don't get bored half way through... something I think tends to happen on my blog!! :S

I'm still only getting between 40-70 hits a day and I've been blogging since last summer! :'( So yeah, I think I'll have to start stealing your style and material!! ;)

Thank you for the assessment of my blog. I would move it to a self-hosted sight like 000webhost.com but they don't seem to be up to par on their one-click auto installer of wordpress.org. I can't afford to pay for self-hosting otherwise I would. 000webhost is free and actually offers more than some paid hosting.

In the past I have noticed that longer blog post don't get many comments but at the same time it is hard to talk about something serious in a couple of paragraphs.

I make sure that I use pictures and link them back to my own blog because I get quite a few hits just from my images.

Lately I have been experimenting with interlinking and seeing if this helps gain more traffic.

It's all one big learning process and I think it helps that I like to read about SEO, which is so limited on WordPress.com.

Again, thanks for the feedback.

Oh I almost forgot. "Steal" away. That's what I do. Here are a couple of tips that I have read in the last few months. I wish i would have kept the source but didn't:

1. One category per post. One can use more tags than this of course but for some reason it is easier on the spiders if one only uses one category per post. I want the spiders to have an easy time on my site.

2. I have read that I don't need to do this because wordpress.com already provides a sitemap for each wordpress site but here I did this anyhow: I went to google webmaster tools and created a site map for this site. I tried doing this for each page on this site but the pages came back as errors??? There is an option to focus on an individual country and I left that blank, so if you look at my fidjet widget you will notice I get hits from all over the world. (of course sometimes it is only US flags...depends on what time of day it is.

I think I am going to write a post about this.
