Are you one of at least four million Americans who are about to have their television set show just snow?  I am.  I really can’t afford to go down to Wal-Mart and dish out $40 dollars for a box just so I can watch TV.  This is one reason I don’t pay for cable or satellite.  It is just too expensive.

TV, Does It Matter?

For the most part I have to say that television doesn’t matter or amount too much in this life.  Most of it is pushed by a one-sided agenda with the goal of making money.  But there are the what ifs.

What If There Is:

  • A Tornado (Fill in the blank for what happens in your part of the country) Update: 7/14/2011: The apartment I wrote this blog post in is now gone because of an F5 Tornado that ripped through Joplin, Missouri!
  • A Terrorists Attack (Everybody says it’s not if it’s when)
  • Another football season (For crying out loud!!)

Dumb Thoughts

How dumb is it of our government to switch the way we watch tv without asking us?  Then on top of this they tell us that we need to spend at least $40 dollars to “upgrade.”  No problem because they offer coupons.  Problem, there are not enough coupons!  Is it dumb that they are going to switch without everybody being able to be ready for it.  How many people do you think will die because they don’t know about the tornado heading straight to their house?

Hey, they're in the process of doing the same over here in the UK at the moment. They're switching all terrestrial signals off starting up in the highlands of Scotland, working their way down to parts of the country people actually live in...

I'm not sure what the policy is here, but I think older people and those on low incomes can receive a free digital box thingy. A lot of people use a paid for satellite service here in the UK called SKY. Only very few people use cable (mostly provided by Virgin) as the channels on offer isn't as good as satellite.

Oh, and if you think your gov is stupid, our gov makes us pay £150 a year for a tv 'license' which mainly goes to paying for the BBC. What happens if you don't want to watch the BBC or listen to BBC radio stations and want to watch satellite channels instead (which costs £30-50 a month on its own)? You still have to pay the license, or you face a fine, criminal conviction and possible prison sentence. Now that's Dumb for ya!
