David Letterman has been nominated for Dummies of the Year

Here is what sealed his nomination: Letterman said, “One awkward moment during the game, maybe you heard about it. One awkward moment for Sarah Palin during the 7th inning her daughter (Palin’s 14-year-old daughter, Willow Palin ) was knocked-up by Alex Rodriguez.  You can see how that would be awkward.” Sarah Palin’s response, “Concerning Letterman’s comments about my young daughter (and I doubt he’d ever dare make such comments about anyone else’s daughter): ‘Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands — that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone’s daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others.’”

My response to Letterman: “You are a sick, twisted individual.  Child rape jokes are not funny.  You need to be canceled not just for that comment but also because you are just not funny anymore.

What are your thoughts on this?

Did you hear Letterman’s response to Palin’s Complaint. I heard the joke when he told it last night and in no way inferred that he was speaking about the 14 year old daughter. Instead, I inferred he was talking about the other daughter who had indeed got herself knocked up out of wedlock. It seems to me that Palin was trying to make it into something far worse when she inferred that he was talking about the 14 year old. Why would she infer such a thing. To take the attention away from the fact that she had one daughter that did get pregnant out of wedlock? That’s my take on it. Also making Letterman look like he was making fun of 14 year old girls getting raped serves thee purpose of making him look like something he is not–somone who would make fun of an idea like that. Which I agree would be despicable. But that is not waht he was doing. View his response on his show tonight.

Are you saying he responded to his own joke? I will have to search for it.

The problem with his joke is he should have gotten his facts straight before telling it. He or his writing staff may have assumed that it was Sarah’s oldest daughter who was at the game but the fact is it was Sarah’s 14 year old daughter Willow.

Doesn’t matter which daughter he is talking about the joke is still not funny. I think he should apologize for his “mistake”

      • Gryphon says:

I respectfully disagree. He constantly talks about the promiscuity of rodriguez and I believe his writers or he knew which daughter was there. But the fact is that it was the older daughter who had previously become pregnant and it made for a joke.

as a joke it should be taken as that. no one is going to take for a fact that either daughter was impregnated by rodriguez. Bad taste is a matter of subjective opinion. Was it in bad taste? that’s up to the individual to determine. Are cancer jokes bad taste? How about dead president jokes? “Besides that, Mrs Kennedy, what did you think of Dallas?” Besides that, Mrs. Lincoln, did you enjoy the play?”

It wasn’t intended to be commentary. It was a joke told by a known comic on a comedy variety show. whether someone found it funny or not is up to them.

Hey Gryph I have no problem with disagreements. :)

He admitted that he was talking about the 18 year old daughter. Still should have checked who came to the game with mom.

He also said it was bad taste and that is how he has made a living.

You mean she IMPLIED Letterman was talking about the younger daughter. The listener infers, the speaker implies. David Letterman is a horse’s patootie and not funny.

Letterman hasn’t been funny for over a decade and he’s been a crabby old man to boot. What saddens me about the “joke” is where are the protests from women’s groups or child advocacy groups? I guess if you’re a conservative woman NOW doesn’t have your back!! You can be publicly called a slut by a two bit has been comic and a joke can be made about your 14 year old daughter’s sexual life but no public outrage from any PUBLIC person is heard.

    • Mel Ancholy says:

If somebody like Glenn Beck would have said the same kind of statement about Obama’s daughters he would have been fired the next hour.

    • Gryphon says:

once again the joke was not about the 14 yr old. It was about the other daughter who is a slut.

      • Mel Ancholy says:

She is a slut? She had sex with her boyfriend. She wasn’t prostituting herself for money. If she is considered a slut then so is her ex-boyfriend.

        • Gryphon says:

I agree that he is a slut too. I am not gender biased. we are talking about her though and not him. A whore and a slut are different things. A whore does it for money, a slut because she/he has loose sexual morals. Bristol Palin has proven herself to have loose sexual morals. There is no requirement to relate all the facts when telling a joke. By definition a joke is non factual to begin with. If Palin had not made a big deal of this no one would be talking about it and the blogs would have one less drum to bang. It would have just been another bad taste joke told at midnight by a late show talk show host and would have been immediately forgotten.

Television remotes come with several buttons or controls built into them. A couple of them change the channel up and down, and another one turns the machine off and on. What I don’t like I don’t watch.

Personally, I like letterman. I have watched him and feel qualified to that opinion. I have also watched Leno and Obrien, and don’t like them. Nothing against them personally. They just don’t entertain me. And that’s ALL those shows were ever intended to be–entertainment and comedy. Not serious news and/or commentary.

    • Mel Ancholy says:

I didn’t actually watch Letterman. I heard and saw clips of what he said over and over by the conservative media.

I think I just get tired of the one way street with liberal media/comedians. They can say something and we are urged to take it as a joke but if the shoe was on the other foot the libs would be outraged. (not saying any of this against you by the way).

    • Mel Ancholy says:

Wow Gryph! Put up your dukes :) I suppose ;)

  6. Mother of a 14 year old says:

I disagree that having sex with a boyfriend at the age of 16 or 17 makes you a slut and I think that is stereotyping young naive girls. If it was multiple boys, yes I would say that. At that age, you think you are going to be with someone forever, nothing bad will ever happen to you and you have no clue about the realities of life and responsibility regardless of how well you have been taught by your parents. As far as Palin’s mothering be slammed….children don’t exactly come with a manual and they have minds of their own. Two can be raised in the same environment but totally different. You say that “Bristol has proven herself to have loose sexual morals”. I would like an explanation of your facts on this issue besides just a vague statement and her being an unweb mother (who’s to say she didn’t get pregnant the first time). Do you talk with Bristol often? As far as going by what the boy says, I don’t exactly trust his exploiting the media and getting paid to go on shows to do so. Boys at that age have also been known to say things not exactly true as a bragging right. My guess is that she really regrets her actions and as a result is left with a child (as a child) trying to raise. Her future plans before the pregnancy will be even harder to achieve.

Regardless of which daughter he was talking about….it was in poor taste and I don’t watch David Letterman either. He’s a has been in comedy and this joke explains why.

  7. Mother of a 14 year old says:

Another point that was left out. I heard about this from the conservative media (O’Reilly and Hannity) before Sarah Palin responded so I disagree with your statement that it would not have received attention if it was not for Sarah and that she was trying to draw attention away from her pregnant daughter. However, I do agree with you on the “rape” spin. I think Letterman meant consensual sex.

Now, you probably think I’m a strong conservative because of O’Reilly and Hannity. I like O’Reilly because I think he points out both bad and good and let’s you set your own opinion. Hannity, on the other hand, has good points but is driven by negativity and constant hounding which annoys me…..and yes I classify myself as a conservative on strong family values but children and young adults do make mistakes.

To me, the sad part is that all of this overshadows the fact of why Sarah Palin was at the ballgame to begin with. She was there as a fundraiser for autism awareness. Now, my 9 year old son is not autistic but instead has dyslexia and ADHD making my sensitivity to children with disabilities an area that hits home with me. My opinion…she was doing a good thing for a good cause (with no media attention) but instead received the blunt end of a bad joke (with lots of media attention). I think one area Sarah would have really been good as Vice President would have been the drive and push for children with disabilities.

This tells me once again that our society is driven by negative spins instead of positive ones. This I feel will be the ultimate demise to happiness and prosperity in America driven by negative media publicity.
