It seems that NFL owners/fans are looking for a quick fix to their teams poor performance. If the coach can’t win and win quickly then that coach is fired.
Coaches Fired in Less Than 5 Years
- Eric Mangini. He coached 3 years with the New York Jets and 2 Years with the Cleveland Browns.
- Mike Singletary. He was fired after only 3 years with the San Francisco 49ers.
- Tom Cable. How many years did he coach the Oakland Raiders before being canned? Just 3.
- Wade Phillips. He was fired after 3 1/2 years with the Dallas Cowboys.
- Josh McDaniels. He was fired after only, ONLY 1 1/2 years!
Mike McCarthy NFL Record
Here is the record for MaCarthy for his first 5 years as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers:
- 8-8
- 13-3 (Lost in the NFC Championship)
- 6-10 (mot NFL teams probably would have fired him)
- 11-5
- 10-6 (Barely made it into the playoffs but wins the Super Bowl!!)
NFL Head Coach Tenure?
The Packers organization didn’t give up on McCarthy. It took him 5 years to win the Super Bowl and on top of that not every year was smooth sailing to the playoffs.
How long do you think an NFL head coach should be given in order to prove that he can lead his team to success? Please comment below.

Chuck Noll would have been fired by a lot of teams before he starting winning with the Steelers.
Sometimes you have to look at progress and talent. I would have not fired Tom Cable or Eric Mangini. I would have fired Wade Phillips and Josh McDaniels sooner.
I actually agree with 100% of what you said.
I can’t wrap my mind around why Cable was fired.
Josh McDaniels didn’t get fired for a losing season. The amount of problems that the Broncos organization had with him was staggering.
* He botched up the relationship with Jay Cutler, and cost the team a potential franchise QB.
* He had the biggest loss against the Raiders, who also had a losing season
* Spygate II
Here’s my thing, I think McDaniels has the potential to be a very good head coach. But I think he was too young and given too much responsibility too early. He needed a good GM who could coach him and teach him how to do it all. But he came in with an “I know it all, already” attitude that didn’t do much to win him over with the organization.
The Broncos actually have a pretty high tolerance of their head coaches. After all, Pat Bowlen stuck with Mike Shanahan for YEARS after the last Super Bowl ring was won. There had to have been a lot of more garbage going on behind the scenes to have Bowlen fire McDaniels prior to the end of the season.
I explained to a friend that McDaniels was 32 when he got hired. My friend said that maybe the owner should have been fired for hiring such a young coach.
I agree with what you said. Good assessment!
