Palmolive ECO Fail

Palmolive-ECOPalmolive has a new line of gel dishwasher detergent and it isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. At first glance it seems great because of their claims.

  • Phosphate Free
  • Better for Lakes and Streams
  • Citrus Apple Splash Sent (whatever that means)
  • Cleans to a SPARKLING SHINE

It probably is phosphate free which would make it better for lakes and streams.  The smell is not that of apples or citrus but of soap, which makes sense because that is precisely what it is.

The big fail for me is that it leaves a white residue on all of my plastic dishes.  On the front it says that it cleans to a sparkling shine.  I don’t expect my plastic dishes to sparkle but I don’t want them to have white residue on them.

Palmolive ECO is a FAIL.

Have you used it?  What did you think?  Name a better brand.

I thought I'd give the gel a shot. Figured I'd try to be good for the environment. We have a great dishwasher and this "soap" did nothing. Tried it twice and then just went with the regular store brand powder. Stuff is clean again. I didn't have any residue issues, just dirty dishes...

WE had the though white residue too! It seemed to target the plastics first, the rest of our dishes!!! Did they never test this junk? Disgusting.

Maybe they've changed something, but this works great for me. I had been having trouble all last year with my dishes not getting clean enough. I tried several brands, both regular and eco-friendly, and nothing was getting clean. I was thinking about getting a new dishwasher. As a last resort, I tried this. And it worked. Not only does it work, but I haven't seen any of the white residue that has plagued others...not on regular dishes, plastic containers, silverware, etc. Everything is clean and rinses clean. I have hard water and this actually rinses out. My glasses haven't been cloudy, either. Again, maybe they read all these bad reviews and changed something, but I've been using it for about 6 weeks now and it's the first dishwasher detergent I've used in almost a year that gets it done.

I agree - This stuff is all kinds of AWFUL! I got the same ugly white residue which simply will not come off some items, even with repeated hand-scrubbing. I just e-mailed the company, so I'm anxious to see what they have to say. Wouldn't it be nice if they offered to pay for my ruined dishes? LOL - I won't hold my breath...

Argh!! Palm Olive needs to pay for your dishes. They make millions.

This stuff SUCKS big time and I am going to do a write up on how bad it sucks on my blog this week. It nearly ruined my dishwasher!!!!

I bought this and after one use trashed it. It ruined all of my plastic, I can't get the film it left off and unless I find something to get this film off of my dishes I will have to trash them. I can hardly stand to touch them with the film all over them. This is more than a fail, I feel this company should pay me for the the detergent and then pay me so I can replace everything that has been washed with it. I am so angry.

Thanks for this topic on Palmolive Eco. We have had 3 loads run and all 3 had the detergent sticking to the inside of the door and the silverware, plates and dishes. We can wash it all off by hand. We began to think the spray nozzles had broken and were not dissolving the detergent. We even went to Sears today to look at new dishwashers. I was heading out to buy a different brand of detergent but looked on the Internet first. I am now going to get the vinegar out and clean the inside of the dishwasher and take the money I saved and buy a new Fridge! Thanks guys.

Sounds like the Eco was a lose/lose and the store brand a win/win.

Glad to hear that you didn't have the same problems as everyone else.

Could be that they changed something with the ingredients.

Thanks for the comment.

I too have used this the lemon version of this product for several months and even made the comment on how shiny my clear glass dishes are/were. About a month ago I started having the issue with the heavy chalky white residue. I am going to try to clean my dishwasher with vineger and use another brand of washing liquid. I have found that srubbing my dhishes with a scouring pad and comet has helped to remove the residue some. Hopefully switching detergents will solve the issue.
Thanks for the posts.

I mentioned this on someone else's comment too, but you can wipe the dishes down with CLR or vinegar and that will take care of the residue. If you're dishwasher is coated as well, run the rinse cycle with white vinegar.

Let me know what the link is to the post when you write about it and I will link to it from this post.

I have used the lemon splash scent for the last several months, and it's fabulous. Have had absolutely no issues with any film on plastics, though plastics rarely find their way into my dishwasher. Have also heard complaints about the scent being too "soapy" or "commercial", but I have not noticed anything but a pleasant light "clean" scent (and I do have a very sensitive nose).
The only thing I'm doing differently is setting my dishwasher on 'normal' rather than 'light', so it runs a bit longer. However, with proper dish rinsing (my kids fail in that area), I could probably go back to the lighter setting without issue.
I have to say... I recommend this product. No phosphates, and it actually works.

You are one of the rare few that has had success with this. Who knows, maybe Palm is seeing the complaints and they are improving their products.

Thanks for commenting Jane.
